Traditionally in Japan, cotton fabrics were considered an indispensable commodity. Kimonos were not always seen as simply a statement, reserved for special occasions. Historically, Kimono were worn every day through harsh Winters and scorching Summers. As such, clothing was re-used repeatedly and never thrown away. Even when completely worn out, fabrics were carefully stitched and patched back together.Ā

For this piece, Studio D'Artisan recreates the traditional "Noragi Sashiko" stitching using kakishibu-dyed threads. By adjusting the depth of dyeing and layering three distinct shades of kakishibu-dyed yarn, an intricate checkered pattern emerges, adding depth and dimension to the fabric. The sashiko motif incorporates "Kaki-no-ha" (persimmon leaf) patterns, a nod to Japan’s rich textile traditions.
